A stone’s throw from the Belgian coast lies the picturesque city of Bruges. Because of its rich past, Bruges is one of the five Flemish cities of art. If you look at Bruges from the air, you will see that besides beautiful, it is also very green. Bruges has many parks that form pools of tranquillity within the sea of the many tourists who visit the medieval city.
One of the many parks is the Astrid park. It’s famous for its kiosk that was once used for open-air concerts. Because the park was a former botanical garden, locals don’t say “Astrid Park” but “Botanical Garden”. In dialect, it becomes “Botanieken hof”. Because many letters are joined or even swallowed in spoken West Flemish, it is pronounced as one word that sounds like “Botaniekenof”.
